The latest feature-length-film from Studio Ghibli and Hayao Miyazaki, The Boy and the Heron, has made history by being the first Japanese animated film to win the “Best Motion Picture – Animated” award at the 2024 Golden Globe Awards.
The Boy and the Heron, which is currently being shown in cinemas across the UK, found itself nominated alongside Suzume, Super Mario Bros. The Movie, Elemental, Wish, and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. Having two Japanese films nominated is an achievement in itself, but having another (in this case The Boy and the Heron) to win the award is superb news for the anime industry; as it shows just how popular and mainstream the medium is becoming.
Shortly after the winner was revealed GKIDS, the american distributor for the film, posted a message from Toshio Suzuki onto X (formally known as Twitter).
That isn’t the only exciting bit of news either, as Hayao Miyazaki has also won Hollywood Creative Alliance’s Astra Award for Best International Filmmaker, of which was also shared by GKIDS on X (formally known as Twitter).
The Boy and the Heron is currently available to watch in Cinemas across the UK in both Dubbed and Subbed formats.
