Why?
Impressions:
God only knows why I would have assumed this, but I expected the torture rape stuff to be toned down at least a little, but no. Of course not. Full crotch shots in rape angles with straight up drill penises. …Great. And both characters are incapable of communicating with anybody in any way besides yelling at them. Wonderful. My favorite tropes in anime. Finally something that gets straight to some actual action and story, with genuine effort put into the animation and direction, and it’s packed with sexual and aural assault.
There’s contrasts here, would be my takeaway. While it does plenty of things correctly, particularly in the artistic direction, there’s absolute no reason that the characters, particularly the dude, needed to be as abrasive as they were, nor the monsters of the week as rapey as they were. Especially considering how boringly cliche they were. I had no friends because I was sullen and unfriendly, it has nothing to do with me screaming at and insulting them. The girl comes off a bit better for at least acknowledging quickly that she screwed up, but then spends the next five minute stripped and being sex assault fanservice.
Considering the rest of the season so far, it’s heads above the pack, I won’t argue that. But it’s almost entirely on the studio’s particular style at the moment.
