Extremely Loud Teenagers #01 — Against a Red Background

My mind was pretty cemented about three minutes in and there was still so much left to go.

Impressions:

Boy, I really screwed the pooch calling the golf show loud. Now the calibration is completely off for when we come to this show that is 100% screaming and making the same couple stupid faces, as the above thumbnails aptly demonstrate. Everything must be overreacted to and yelled about in the exact same way. The blissful few moments where it’s not that girl screaming petulantly, it’s mostly internal narration. The brief times when it goes all trashy harem somehow manage to be the most tolerable parts, and even those are stuff like his cousin-sister sitting on his lap or the Fashionable Spice bending over to demonstrate that she is the cleavage-haver of the group.

You make these things work through the characters, and this failed at that badly. They’re both immature obnoxious little brats and the only thing the script even tries to do to mitigate that is to have other characters call out that they’re being stupid brats. Well, and that the entire premise is stupid to start with. I’m sure the theory that she’s actually cute is meant to carry this, but she’s not, and the protagonist is hardly any better, just yells somewhat less. Neither has a single redeeming quality, nor is there even one attempted in the episode, let alone shown. Even the trashiest harem knows that the protagonist needs to show that he’s actually a decent guy to prove their misunderstandings wrong for a second chance. This doesn’t even get so far as the first. And screams the entire way through.
