Okinawa Girl #01 — Text On Screen

Taking the correct lesson from status screen shows, I see.

Impressions:

I would say that it lived up to my expectations, but I expected it to be a mix of light racism, overreactions, tourism, and fanservice, and I think it definitely didn’t live up to the back half of that list. Well, racism is probably a bit harsher a term than it warrants, since I’m pretty sure this is funded at least in large part by Okinawa’s tourism department itself, but a whole episode of “People from this region have all kinds of crazy nonsense customs!” is a bit much, especially when the area’s mascot pops up to go on long explanations of them. Imagine if we did this with, say, Kentucky. Or Hawaii. It’s one thing to have Sesame Street or Mr. Rogers teaching about local customs. It’s another when it’s wrapped up in wish fulfillment fetishism on top of “let’s laugh at how thick their accents are. And how weird their food is!”

I guess it wasn’t that offensive in any particular way, but like many of these things, it wants to cut the baby in half in order to have two babies to eat. If it wants to be a tourism pitch about Okinawa, it’s distracted by janky fanservice and jokes at Okinawa’s expense. If it wants to be a romcom, it’s undirected, unfocused, and keeps getting sidelined to learn a fun fact about rural Okinawa that’s probably at least 30 years out of date at this point. So what remains is a bloody mess, not a delicious meal. Maybe I’m just hungry. Or wanting to murder someone after having my eyes blasted by text covering 75% of the screen for an entire episode.
