Once Upon a Witch’s Death #01 — Teenagers Screaming in Graveyards

Gimme your fluids, grieving people.

Yes, the site is still on fire. No, I don’t have an ETA for a fix. It’s been two weeks and multiple support tickets now. I’m sorry, and I’m more frustrated than you.

Impressions:

Can’t say I was expecting upbeat electric guitar to kick things off. Or to be quite so comedic. Though by comedic, I mean that the girl overreacts to everything very loudly. But it’s probably best that it doesn’t focus on the story, because I’m pretty sure that I can already tell you what eventual ‘twist’ is going to be considering her decrepit master is literally named “Faust the Immortal” who sends her on a quest to obtain life-extending emotion tears to save herself. And the way English pronouns work has already probably made it clear who’s actually dying here. It’s certainly not about confronting your impending mortality in any serious way whatsoever. Not even to the level of a Disney film.

At the same time though, that undermines the more dramatic side where she bumps into some kid who wants flowers for her mother’s grave. She… doesn’t really do much of anything besides sit and listen to the tale of woe, cast a spell, and then steals their precious fluids. Which itself could’ve actually been a funny moment or setup; a petty overpowered girl selfishly doing good out of spite and greed, but no. Aside from her randomly yelling in overreactions, it’s all played straight and you’re definitely meant to feel emotional when she… casts a spell that makes flowers appear? And tells the kid “good girl”? Seems like the absolute bare minimum. It’s… fine, but you don’t need that much time to tell a story with actual depth and pathos to it, and I can’t say the first story here did a good job of it. Maybe it’ll do better without half the episode being eaten up by exposition and schtick, but I’m skeptical.
