Oh, adaptations.
Impressions:
Look, I can enjoy the pastoral classic tale of living into the countryside… in theory. I can at least tolerate stuff like All Creatures Great and Small, but I’d also point out to there being actual characters, minor mysteries, light drama, snarky remarks about pigs, etc. The British have been churning out these miniseries for decades, without having to suffer a JPop opening or ending in the process. And since I mentioned the pacing of the original 1970s adaptation of this which is considered an anime classic, I should point out that this episode covered the same amount of content as the first five episodes combined of that one. Every four minutes of this episode was an entire episode of the adaptation that they decided needed to be redone, and redone right this time. I’m not sure if that’s wisdom, hubris, or shooting their own horse before it’s left the stable.
The core problem is that Anne of Green Gables is at its core, a pretty boring book. Sure, I can accept that a girl… a girl! being headstrong, outspoken, clever, likeable, etc and not a miserable spinstress was a rarity for not just when it was published, but even when I was growing up, it was a rarity, and it absolutely has merit for that, but nowadays, we’re awash in spunky heroines who win everybody over with their innocent perfection. Appreciating its historical context and importance even twenty years ago is a far cry from wanting to actually sit down and endure it today.
