Not even updating the school uniforms.
Impressions:
Certainly the best animated first episode of the season so far, but let’s remember that this is Wit and they have a long history of impressive first couple episodes before phoning it in for the rest of the season (Nokotan, Suicide Squad, Vivy, etc). It’s definitely trying to get in on that retro revival thing that’s going on, but I’m not at all familiar with the original series, either to say how much of a redo it is from the first adaptation of thirty years ago, or if this is indeed a “more faithful to the source” type deal, but I wouldn’t be surprised by either. All the greatest gags of the late 1980s are certainly back here, which is at least slightly more variety than modern day comedy. You’ve got yelling, overreactions, and overexaggerated cariacatures. …I’ll take any variety at this point.
Still, it’s just a shounen action comedy. It’s not lighting the world on fire with its premise of an annoying kid who wants to be the strongest comes to live in a dojo with his marketable pet and tells everybody that he’s going to challenge them. If that sounds like a good time, great. Here’s another one that should be well animated for a couple episodes before Wit’s inevitable production issues kick in. If not, it’s not going to win you over with its characters or humor. I kind of doubt I’ll stick with it, not exactly being a slapstick shounen fan, but I can at least see, and remember, how some of these were done well and would rather see more of them instead of all the cheat powers and being kicked from the party.
