Maebashi Witches #01 — An Assault on Aesthetics

Finding a way to be offensive to the maximum number of senses.

Impressions:

This show is… exhausting on every level. Painful even. Well beyond just being boring or soulless. There are very few moments in it that don’t have someone petulantly yelling in rapidfire even while loud music blasts out and the colors assault the eyes. I almost want to compare it to GoHands for how overstimulating it is, but they’re much better on the audio front, and overdo the action scenes, not have a sustained pastel intensiveness on the eyes that’s fatiguing to even focus on. Maybe its just the entire thing taking place in a pure white void that makes it so hard on the eyes, AND makes the animation look especially janky, which gets worse when it goes full CGI for the obligatory idol concert.

Really though, it’s the audio that’s murder. High pitched nonstop yelling that fills almost every single moment of the show, made worse by the script being truly godawful. “WE’RE WITCHES!?” “YES, WE ARE WITCHES! WITCHES ARE MEANT TO GRANT WISHES!” “GRANT WISHES!? CAN WE REALLY GRANT WISHES!?” “LOOK! SHE DOESN’T EVEN KNOW THAT WE’RE WITCHES WHO GRANT WISHES! WHAT KIND OF WITCH IS SHE THAT DOESN’T KNOW THAT!?” “UUEEEEEEEEEEEHHHHHH!?” Oh my god. Shut the hell up. No, don’t launch into a godawful CGI idol pop scene. Someone put this script down on paper, handed it to an editor, and then gave it to people to record. Any of you could’ve stopped this, and you did nto.
