Gundam Quacks #01 — Meet-Cute

We’re just letting this kid take our giant robot? Nobody’s going to stop her?

Impressions:

It looks like they’re indeed doing the theatrical episode 0 as the first few episodes. I was wondering how much it expected you to watch that and/or be a fan of the original very first Gundam, which I am not. Not sure it’d actually help, but there is a lot of gibberish thrown around that I at least recognize as Gundam terms from my dabbling in SRW, and it seems like they’re things that should mean something, but also, not really important. Like I could follow Lazarus, it just made no sense. I’m not sure if I could follow what was actually worth paying attention to, and it kept cutting away right when a fight between chonky CGI mechs appeared to be starting, so even that wasn’t coming off as important, except then they’d crash back into view three minutes later.

Anyway, I did my time with Witch From Mercury, ended up pissed off at the entire series and for any hope I had for the characters and story, even if just to watch a trainwreck since the writing was never actually good, and I feel like I’ve had my share of Gundam for a decade. I think the big failing here in comparison to its opening episodes is the characters. We’re doing the dual quirky girls have a meet-cute thing again, but this time the awkward one is on the sideline and the noisy one is the pilot. Neither are introduced well this episode, and blasting bubblegum pop was definitely not helping. Especially Red, who’s a brat who runs around and starts rummaging through criminals stuff and steals their giant WMD and… everybody just lets her for some reason? And she wants to do this because… she feels trapped, I guess? Other than a couple snarky one-liners, she doesn’t actually say much.
