Why is this so well animated?
Impressions:
There’s definitely a director and a bunch of animators involved with this show who really wanted to do a retro ninja action show but got stuck with this instead and are trying to make the best of it. There’s no reason whatsoever for it to be as well animated as it is… in parts. It even understands and replicates the jank of old anime, like being able to see the parts of the scenery that would be animated eventually by how they didn’t match. That’s a disturbing amount of detail for a background joke.
Unfortunately, at its core, it’s still a “girls make faces” kind of comedy. The occasional bouts of shockingly good animation, and having a bit more variety in its exact kinds of gags does put it at least a tier or two above its ilk, though a lot of it is still over-excited yelling in reactions. I don’t know if I’d put it above, say, the deer show’s first episode thus far, and it shares a lot of similarities, just not as much marketing or memes. Worth enough for a second look at the very least, and there’s not much else on Thursdays this season regardless.
