Theogonia #01 — Yet More Magic Fruit

Always the magic fruit. When will it be eating magic cows?

I don’t think my brain can tolerate either Dinner Detective thing, or another season of Bye Bye Earth. The culprit was one of the friends who was wearing a gem that changed colors and recently had her hair done, which is why she wasn’t recognized. And was told to go say sorry. Seems like a light sentence for attempted manslaughter. Bye Bye Earth, on the other hand, had Belle continue to mope while Adonis set off to assassinate everybody. Including the local demigod, who just sat there, let himself die, while whining at him for rejecting The World, so Adonis declared himself Sephiroth.

Impressions:

This was kind of a weird one. It’s doing all the same godawful cheat power tropes, including reincarnation, but only out of obligation, I guess. A fantasy world that rigidly has everything in castes. Everybody spends all their time explaining what the castes are and how it’s for the greater good, even while announcing that they’re part of the oppressed while the nobles lord it over them. There’s a special magic level system that only the grand poobahs get which gives them their cheat powers and caste status. So on and so forth. Except being cloaked in RPG terms, it’s wearing the skin of high fantasy, where it’s all heavily ritualized and has weird names, like Grand Poobah instead of Rank S Adventurer.

Is that better? I guess. But it still turns into an episode that’s about 98% characters explaining the basics of how the world works to each other despite all of them already supposedly knowing it. But I also suspect it’s because there’s not a whole lot of budget to go around either, since it’s pretty poorly animated for having multiple fights against orcs and orc-lites. How often do you have conversations with your friends where you explain to them the concept of fiat currency, and that money can be exchanged for goods and services? It’s the same thing here, and it robs the show of time that could’ve been spent instead developing characters or a story. I don’t care if they have a special inner organ that reacts specially with the special tree juice that’s reserved for only the most special people, no matter how many nonsensical buzzwords or ritualistic practices you put around all that.
