Ninja and Assassin #05 — Invasive Technology

AI is taking all our jobs.

Impressions:

A very mixed bag here, which is still better than the godawful previous episode. They finally let the animators who actually wanted to do old visual style parodies out of the cupboard they locked them in. Not only that, but they seem to have stumbled on the first page or two of an actual legitimate sitcom script written by a sane person who knew what they were doing. The whole schtick about wanting something different, getting what they wanted, and then realizing what was actually important that they were taking for granted and a return to the status quo.

Except that it didn’t jettison what made the previous episode or two so bad either. There’s only really one joke this episode for one. Konoha doesn’t see the robot as a fake. That’s it. That’s the joke. Second, it’s both of them continuing to be terrible people nonstop. Fine if you’re taking a schadenfreude angle, but it’s a struggle to see that here. Konoha isn’t presented as cruel or spiteful. This other mad scientist girl isn’t an ass. Everybody gets the supportive partner or dream job that they scream-lamented wanting, and then Satoko simply ignores it and kills her robot version having never put any of the pieces together. And then the episode awkwardly ends right after that, with everybody wallowing in misery. Please laugh?
