One Piece’s Legendary Left Hand of Roger
Scopper Gaban, also known as the “Mountain Eater,” not because he is married to a giant goth mommy, although you can make an argument for it. But the real reason why he got that name is that he once defeated hundreds of pirates on a mountain while protecting Roger, who wasn’t at his best. Gaban had cleaned up every pirate and vegetation there on the mountain with his dual axes, earning him the title of mountain eater.
Gaban first made his appearance in a flashback alongside the other members of the Roger pirates. Then we see him in a cover story, in the present day, where he is drinking with Crocus at the Twin Cape. Then, in the Oden flashback and now in Elbaph, he plays a vital role.
Gaban is a very perceptive individual, being the Left-Hand Man of the Pirate King, he had to make quick decisions since Roger was always getting them into trouble with not only the Marines but also with other pirate crews. Gaban considers himself the second strongest of the crew after Roger himself. His personality is very cheeky as he enjoys people making trouble and getting into action, even though he is retired.
Scopper Gaban, the Family Man of Elbaph
After Roger disbanded the Roger pirates, Scopper Gaban kept exploring the world while also settling down in Elbaph and now has a wife and a kid. Ripley, who is named after the famous WWE superstar Rhea Ripley, is an 80-year-old giant who settled down with Gaban and had a kid with him, Colon, who is 20 years old.
Both of them are very proud of Gaban and are aware of his legendary journey with the Roger Pirates; Colon even sings his praises to Luffy and his gang.
Gaban is enjoying his retirement in Elbaph and had a kid with a giant… Many people might think, how is that possible because of the size difference, but Gaban calls himself the “Preacher of Love”. Size does not matter at all to the mountain eater.
The Power of the Pirate King’s Left Hand
Scopper Gaban is a master of all 3 forms of haki. He is still strong enough to one-shot a God’s Knight like Shepherd Sommers. He considers himself to be the second strongest of the Roger pirates, putting himself below Gol D. Roger and above the Dark King Silvers Rayleigh.
Gaban shows a similar rivalry with Rayleigh, just like Sanji and Zoro have, another parallel to the pirate king crew. He was toying with Luffy and Zoro when they first met, even without his axes.
Observation Haki
His observation haki is top tier since he was able to sense the God’s Knights Shamrocka and Gunko when they arrived at the castle. Even though Luffy and Zoro were not able to.
Not only that, but he is one of the very few characters in the world who can use “future vision” and see into the future.
Armament Haki
Gaban uses armament haki to coat his axes in it and gets down to business, cutting and cleaving his enemies.
Conqueror’s Haki
Gaban can also utilize advanced conqueror’s haki by encasing his axes in it, allowing him to one-shot a God’s Knight like Sommers and significantly slow down his regeneration.
From Gaban to “Ya-san”
Many people might be confused why the giants refer to Gaban as “Ya-san” when his name is Gaban. That is because his name in Japanese is pronounced as “Scoppa Gyaban”. But his official name in English is Scopper Gaban. This can confuse the readers.
