A Ninja and an Assassin Under One Roof Review — B+

The assassin has a heart of stone and the ninja is a fool.

It’s been a while since we’ve gotten a Shaft show. Seems like they’ve been busy making movies? Anyway, the time without them may have helped, but also I think they toned down the visual effects a bit more than their worst here. The style certainly added instead of detracting from the show in this case, which I feel it often did in the past.

My favorite parts are the casual brutality and heartlessness, not only in terms of how they kill their targets and the people trying to kill them, but also how they get injured and treat each other emotionally. My favorite arc was the Roboko arc, where the ninja gets replaced by a robot. The assassin likes the robot better than the human and gets close with her. Then the ninja casually kills the robot and is confused when the assassin isn’t grateful. Absolutely brutal story arc on so many different levels. I loved it.

Storytelling – B – Unique style, great sense of humor.
Voice – A – Nothing like it.
Characters – A – They’re all awful. Love them.
Attention Grab – B – Kept my interest.
Production – B – Looks good!
Overall – B+
