Hell Teacher Nube #02 — The Furry Agenda

They’re after our children’s skulls.

Two more premieres today, but I need to do some work stuff for a bit. They’re both reincarnation things anyway.

Impressions:

This episode too, felt largely fine, for anybody into shounen things, but I really doubt it’ll win anybody over who wants something with a little more meat to it. Nube especially feels like kind of the weak link at the moment since all he really does is haul around a gross hand and yell “I’mma protect my students!” He’s at least not being obnoxious, and we’re steering clear of standard shounen humor, which is to say overreactions and yelling, but you can still be snarky or light hearted, while so far, he’s just pretty boring. Again, better than irritating, and not spending all the episode listening to him recite fun facts, but avoiding pitfalls isn’t the same as a cool backflip in this metaphor.

I’m a little more intrigued myself because unlike the first episode, this one is quite changed from the original source. The furry skull-stealer rival shows up earlier, a whole bunch of bad slapstick is excised, and a fair bit of extra body horror added. I still think it falls short of other episodic monster hunter things like Garou, for example, or even Elusive Samurai/Kekkaishi to go full shounen, which had more compelling characters, stronger stories, and much better animation, and the middle of this episode especially where everybody decided we were done with all the chasing around and it was time to settle in and have a talk about all our motivations dragged a lot, but it’s like 60% of the way there.
