Thanks for the exposition and telling me it was stupid.
I did glance at 9-nine- to see if it had improved from its second episode, but it was going in the opposite direction, with even less focus on anything interesting. Nobody stabbed, turned to stone, set on fire, not even invisibility fanservice. Pathetic.
Impressions:
Unfortunately, a significantly weaker episode than the first, and I’d put that all on the pacing. The first episode featured the entire cast all doing their own things, while this one did just the one, which meant that everybody else was relegated to sitting in the background providing commentary. Or worse, exposition. Exposition where the joke at the end of it was them complaining that the exposition was pointless and unnecessary. And it was indeed those things. You know it’s pointless. You’re announcing that it’s pointless. So why are we doing it?
Its couple attempts to do character growth were also not well handled. The mage girl’s was out of nowhere and then immediately ditched, and his own schtick at the end was also perfunctory. I think they both probably could have been made to work had you moved both to the end and built them up better. Maybe had him be overconfident before struggling so you could at least do a better job pretending like there was progression instead of slapping it all at the end, but maybe I’m reaching and the first episode was something of a fluke from going fast to get everybody introduced.
