No point in sugarcoating it, that was a total snooze for me. And with Sundays being as crazy as they are this season no point in spending a lot of time on an episode that had my finger wavering over the slider on more than one occasion. Fake anime within an anime usually have the problem of being shows I would never watch if they were actual shows. But if you’re going to do it, at least something like the Witch Watch route – playing it as parody – provides a source of amusement. This was played just about totally straight, which just meant it was ten minutes of a boring trope-fest.
I do have one question. The rules for the beauty contest are that a girl has to dress as a boy and a boy as a girl, as I understand it. So if Marin is cosplaying a character who’s actually a girl, isn’t that a violation of the rule? At least the spirit of it? Well, whatever – it’s not like anyone’s thinking that deeply about all this (or should be). I do give the episode credit for landing in the right spot vis a vis Gojo. All the while I was thinking “why not just beg off working on the physical labor because you have to design the outfit?” And of course so was everyone else – it was only Wakana himself daft enough to think he was expected to do both.
While there would have been some entertainment value in seeing Marin try and make an outfit herself, this is better in the end. I just hope it doesn’t drag on too long and next week’s episode settles the matter. I’m not fool enough to imagine we’re going to get romance-driven material most of the time with Sono Bisque Doll, but even the cosplay stuff can hold my attention if it’s at least somewhat character-driven (like the Amane subplot). This, not so much.
