It’s been a pretty decent anime season on the whole. But generally speaking a disappointing one for sequels. Hanako and Dandadan have held their end up but Sono Bisque Doll and Yofukashi no Uta have been significant downgrades from their first seasons. With Yofukashi it’s a case of drift I think – the focus is off, but the show overall is still very good, just no longer great. With Bisque Doll (which admittedly I didn’t like as much in the first place, though I still liked it a lot) it’s more of a cliff. More often than not this season I’m just bored, and that’s not a good place to be.
My finger was twitching this week, wanting to click the scroll bar. The cosplay sisters never did much for me even in S1 but even within the context of my general lack of passion for the series’ cosplay obsession, they’re a snooze. I mean seriously, who cares about Sajuna moping over her cup size? The series’ obsession with female prosthetics is a little creepy to begin with even for a cosplay show, but really, the point has long been made. Themes are being recycled and the sense is that this is a writer without a whole lot of real ideas at this point.
The stuff with Akira and Gojou was mildly better I suppose, as we at least didn’t have the fetishizing. But still pretty much a snooze. The overall theme of “vive la différence!” and accepting people for who they are is a healthy one no question, especially for adolescents. But again – point made. Recycled. And how long is this molehill of Akira’s mysterious dislike for Marin going to be portrayed as Mt. Fuji? Just get it out in the open already and be done with it. That I suspect will at least be addressed in next week’s season finale, but any progress on the romance front almost certainly will not.
