Face Boy and Face Girl #01 — Yelling at Everything

At least it’s interacting.

Impressions:

Basically the same as the previous show, but with genders reversed and more comedic. Just having a larger cast, including multiple who tell the lead that they’re an imbecile for their obsession instead of glorifying it, does do a lot of heavy lifting to make it more tolerable. Hell, at the end, all of them even cavort around, so it’s not a weird pocket dimension where only the two of them exist to make starry eyes at each other. A lack of internal narration explaining everything is also welcome. Still, it’s pretty much the same as things like Teasing Takagi and the like, and the opening scene especially drags like hell despite being based on the singular joke that he plays Old Maid extremely poorly. It improves and picks up quite a bit after that.

Still though, it’s a ‘comedy’ based on the dude overreacting and yelling loudly while everybody else is deadpan. Including the wildlife, which also gets overreacted to and yelled at, so at least he’s consistent. It’s fine, but there’s only so much of that I can personally stomach, and there’s plenty of better boy meet girl romances out there with far better gimmicks than “girl is sort of taciturn” which also I feel undercuts a lot of potential chemistry when it’s just a dude emoting against a blank slate, so I don’t really expect there to be an upward trajectory in the humor or their interactions.
