Monster Wants to Eat Me #02 — “I Don’t Get It”

She said for the fiftieth time.

Impressions:

Guess the honeymoon’s over after a single episode and it’s time to re-recite the premise, explain it, ruminate on the explanation, repeat the explanation, and then ruminate some more, crashing any urge I might have to continue. The pacing of the story was already laborious but this episode took it out back and shot it. Is it because she’s not a vampire? Everybody knows this is exactly how literally all vampire shoujo things work so we can skip at least 25% of it (but usually don’t). Is her being a mermaid really that much of a brain bender that we need twenty minutes to go over the whole rearing/grooming thing? Apparently so. Whatever fills the time between the bad attempts at bad comedy, aka that one girl overreacting loudly.

And the main character is doing herself no favors either by most of her dialog being “I don’t get it,” which necessitates yet more recapping and review of the conversation that we just had. It’d be far more interesting if she was at least somewhat confrontational, or tried to goad her into killing her, or putting herself in harm’s way somehow to test her. Wouldn’t actually showing her being self-destructive be a better dynamic? Hell, pull some other monster out of your ass to threaten her and you can still have her be a lump of depression not capable of doing anything or thinking anything and now that’s also a self-destructive impulse to be rescued from.
