Twisted Wonderland #01 — But… But… Regionals!

I expected nothing and I got nothing.

Impressions:

Finally we reach the last new anime of the season, and it is predictably terrible. I’m hard pressed to say which between the start and ending was worse written, but I think I’ll give it to the former. It was both the introduction to everything, and it was so much worse. The latter went on longer, but at least bounced between all like 20 characters reciting their or someone else’s name and then their one character trait. Both had that godawful exposition of characters flat out reciting exposition in the most artificial and nonsensical ways possible. “That’s our XYZ. He’s our upper classman who revived the kendo club all on his own and will lead us to regionals tomorrow.” “Yes, he’s an inspiration and worked hard to restore the club from nothing and is going to win at regionals.” “He works hard and is friends with YZX, who is struggling, but is going to try his best at regionals.” Yeah, guys. Thanks. Very natural dialogue.

Which isn’t to say that the middle was any better, only that it was just nonsensical exposition, and not quite AS stilted. He’s summoned to a magical school, so he needs to have it explained to him that it’s a magical school. But he’s a regular boy and, as we’ve established a dozen times already, has to go to regionals. But that’s super insulting to the kids at Harvard to have a muggle that they kidnapped refuse to join their school for some idiotic reason. Yeah, that’s how the elites work alright. Then a cat kicks in a window, sets fire to everything, and everyone goes into a mad panic of exposition and character introductions that mean nothing because there’s 20 in a row, all lasting 5 seconds. Gotta make sure everybody’s fave gets their moment of screentime after all. Then to end? A cutaway tutorial bit for… you guessed it… more exposition. And yet, I have learned nothing. Job well done.
