Fumetsu gonna Fumetsu, you know? This damn show, it’s unhinged but in a hilariously predictable way. You know that every time it sets you up like a bowling pin with a run of coherent and engaging material, it’s going to knock you down like a Dick Weber strike with whackadoodle like this episode. Gets to wearing thin, that’s for sure. But the most foolish thing would be to expect it to change – after two and a half seasons it should be patently obvious that’s never going to change. There’s no point in assigning unrealistic expectations to a series and then complaining when it can’t meet them.
Another thing that’s wild about To Your Eternity is Ooima Yoshitoki’s uncanny ability to craft really entertaining and likeable side characters like Zushi and Yuki, and then throw utter dross like Tonari and Hirotoshi in your face. The latter is not-Mimori’s stepbrother. And for good measure a walking and talking (too much and too loudly) caricature of every offensive otaku stereotype in existence. I get that Ooima was probably going for satire here (and indeed, this whole modern arc has been more humor-driven than any preceding it) but man – he truly is awful.
Look, I get that lots of guys like Hirotoshi exist. If they didn’t lolimouto crap wouldn’t be money in the bank for game, LN, and anime creators. But she manages to be both condescending and apologist with this creation. Even his father knows that he’s a lolicon, then thinks nothing of leaving him alone with his stepdaughter for a week? And Hirotoshi’s tastes are painted as harmless, even when presented in stark and in-your-face fashion. That whole flashback was creepy and awful, but at least it was Fumetsu being weird in its own inimitable way, which I guess is kind of reassuring. Some things never change,
Between Hirotoshi’s arrival and Mizuha’s full-on Hayase turn, the crazies have really full-on hold of Fumetsu no Anata e again. Fortunately we at least have Fushi’s fish out of water antics as he cosplays as a schoolboy and Yuki’s relentlessly hilarious interventions in his life. The plan is for the two of them to search for Minori after school but she saves them the trouble, coming out to play without having to be asked. One nokker against Fushi isn’t really much of a concern power-wise, though this one is naive to that fact. But it does represent the larger issue that always crops up in Fumetsu – Sisyphus’ ball has rolled back down the mountain again, and the eternal standoff continues.
