Gotta Do My Best to Do My Best.
Impressions:
The race to the bottom for this season continues apace. I had few hopes for this episode after the non-resolution of the previous one, and boy, did it not live up to even them. He goes to her and apologizes for not Doing His Best, so now he’s going to Do His Best at Doing His Best. That was as expected. A complete nothing and vow to return to the status quo, nobody having learned anything, grown in any way, nor reflecting on anything but the emptiest of platitudes. It was Iroha for once who was a trash fire of a character, revealing that she was acting out on purpose for attention and even now was secretly recording him to lord it over him. Platonically. Totally. Wink wink. All those bits of her being angsty previous episodes, cast away in the wind, until the next time they need to manufacture up some drama, which will be never because there’s only a couple episodes left. Status quo truly and entirely slammed home with finality.
But that’s only the first half of the episode. The second half returns to the weird mushroom girl plot thread that was introduced and abandoned in the same episode… uh… three weeks ago, I think? Which is also more or less resolved by telling them to know their place and they’ll teach them to do everything from scratch, so I guess this is what we’re going to be doing for the remainder of the show. Fantastic.
