Fumetsu no Anata e (To Your Eternity) Season 3 – 10

On the plus side, the whole Mimori-Hirotoshi thing seems pretty much over. Small blessings, then, as there’s not a lot else in the current arc that’s clicking for me. I do feel for Fushi in his Sisyphean struggle with the injustice of existence (much more than with the Nokkers). But Fumetsu is in the mode where almost everything it does annoys me, and there aren’t many series that are as good at annoying me as To Your Eternity. It’s a real slog when it gets like this, but three seasons is a lot of investment to just cast aside.

Mizuha and her whole line are fingernails on the blackboard for me. Tonari likewise, though she’s not quite as bad in this modern setting as she was in her native one. I’m not sure which is creepier, actual Mizuha or Nokker Mizuha – they’re both playing with considerably less than a full deck. Then we have Funa, the girl who was likewise occupied by a Nokker. She too bore suicidal thoughts, and there’s something particularly ghoulish about the Nokkers preying on people like that. But their belief that they’re doing the right thing is even stronger now than it was 500 years earlier.

That belief leads to Funa (the naginata girl) being ended by Mizuha (under Nokker control). It’s the kindest thing, right? What’s hilarious is that Mizuha wakes up from these interludes and she’s just as loopy as she is when her Nokker is in charge. it also leads to the guy who’s interested in Mizuka, Rikuya, having every bone in his body broken (it’s not absolutely clear how this played out). The ball is really in Fushi’s court here – the Nokkers claim they want to live alongside him but their view of right and wrong is obviously something Fushi can never stomach.

The thing is, Fushi is both rather naive and rather simple in his way. His immortal brain is capable of remarkable feats but he’s utterly straightforward – he just doesn’t cope that well with the weird mind games his eternal nemeses always spring on him. I suppose it’s his struggle that keeps me watching at this point – one does want happiness for Fushi, even if it seems increasingly clear it can never be more than fleeting. If Karma was a thing you’d think the universe would cut him a break, because he certainly deserves it.
