New Anime

Let’s Play Review — C+

A young woman grows into her career and relationships in Los Angeles.

I just finished recording a Kaiseki episode on this one with Marina so look forward to that.

There was a lot to like about this show. Mainly I enjoyed the American setting. Apparently it’s based on a comic by an American author too!

Which leads to my main problem… it had a bit of an uncanny valley effect. The setting is just off enough to be disturbing. It’s relatively minor things. Like how they call each other Mister or Miss like a Japanese person uses honorifics. Or how they pronounce “Sam” as “Samu” (ok I know I am being ridiculous but it annoyed me).

What annoys me the most is how all the characters are so open and blunt about their feelings. On the one hand this is great and refreshing because it’s so unlike other anime. However, they take it really far. They always tell each other their feelings even when they probably don’t need to and really shouldn’t. And they all talk to each other like the stereotypes of how people talk to their therapists. It’s a bit much.

I also hate the romantic subplot with her boss. He’s supposed to be this super professional, experienced older gentleman (he seems British coded and I have no idea why). But then this super professional experienced wiser gentleman is hitting on his employee who’s just out of college. And no one finds this strange or problematic!!!

Anyway, look forward to our upcoming podcast episode where we talk about this in more depth.
