Agents of the Four Seasons #01 — Sad Girls in Snow

Feels like it’s been a while since we had one of these.

Yeah, yeah. Season preview should be up tomorrow or Monday, which means probably Monday afternoon. It’s done except for the pithy remarks. I knew this was coming today, but I think there’s only one other March premiere, and it’s on the 31st, AND it’s one of the relatively few godawful cheat power reincarnation things of the season, so I extra don’t care about it.

Impressions:

This is by the same author as Violet Evergarden, and is largely a very similar deal. Instead of sad emotionally stunted robots bravely lamenting a past conflict, it’s sad magical emotionally stunted avatars of the seasons bravely lamenting a past conflict. No, you can’t see it. But trust me, it was super sad and super dramatic. Look how tearful their eyes are. How many graves we’re staring at. How clenched their fists are and scrunched their faces become. So much emotion. Go with what works, I guess.

Except that Wit has far less talent, or perhaps chutzpah when it comes to emotional wringing, than KyoAni did, so there isn’t nearly as much bloom or dramatically blowing wind to highlight just how tragic and dramatic the sad girls in snow are. Plus, the main sad emotionally stunted girl speaks in a… halting and… staggered… sing-song… ca…dence… to extra extra EXTRA accentuate just how emotionally stunted she is which was slowly grating on my nerves through the entire damn episode. But also, the entire episode was them going to a random spot in the woods to stare at a grave and feel emotions around some random kid that happened to be there. Not the most eventful nor attention grabbing of hooks. Stuff happened. What stuff? Off-screen. Don’t worry about it. Just be emotional. With this faceless blob. Even for sad girls in snow, there have been far better pitches.
