Loud overreaction day in anime today, huh.
Double episode premiere. I’ll probably get to episode 2 a bit later. Dogs to walk, and at least one to two other way more shouty things to subject myself to.
Impressions:
Can’t say I’m impressed with this episode to be honest, mainly because it didn’t need to be two. Maybe the second episode picks up the pace. Don’t give anime producers an inch, they were stretch out anything to fill the time. Anyway, I don’t know how many times it needed to be announced that magic is magical, but it’s a lot. Same with how she loves magic, because it’s so magical. And then they get to the reveal that magic is drawing runes… by showing him draw the missing part of a giant slab covered in runes. Ya’ll really couldn’t have figured this out on your own? That runes are what make the magic? And wait, the wand is a pen? I could’ve taken the cap off at any time? I was supposed to DRAW in the DRAWING book!? Oh! Em! Gee! It would’ve been entirely fine to leave it at “you need magic to magic”, but that wouldn’t have filled another 10 minutes, now would it? Are we sure the witches aren’t giving everybody brain damage with their casual mindwiping?
It presents her as having been insatiably curious about this stuff her entire life, but every reveal is superficial or obvious, while forgetting to establish any reason why magic is so great besides “it’s magic.” Mainly, it creates bloom, but since this is anime, what doesn’t? So do nipples most of the time. Which is also weird because witchery is generally treated as a mixed bag, but here it’s simultaneously frowned on that she wants to do it, but everyone loves and respects witches. There’s also not a whole lot for the animation to flex, and I know that Bug can do better than this. It’s only really the end where their strength is really on display, and even that is just a dude zipping around for a few seconds and some CGI rocks enrockifying the place.
