To Be Hero X #21 — The Iceman Cometh

We’re really calling anybody a hero, huh?

Sorry. My laptop self-destructed in the middle of watching this, and I spent over an hour trying to recover it. It’s done this before, but revived after 15 minutes. This time I think it may be gone for good. So I had to pull an old one out of retirement, which was painful to get up to speed. When it rains, it pours.

Impressions:

This seems less like the origin story for the new dude and more like explaining what happened with Nice1. Except… who gives a crap about him? Or this weird dumbass kid? As usual, the social stuff here is baffling. If I’m hanging out at a lake in the middle of winter, and a naked dude covered in tatoos claws through the ice, I’m pretty sure I assume that’s a wendigo or something. At the same time, if his first reaction is to start throwing hands while they’re just sitting there gawking in disbelief, the stated raison d’etre of them being the scum of the earth rings hollow.

All that sort of sets aside that once again, about 80% of this episode was two dudes sitting at a table, one of them monologuing exposition at the other, with none of it being the least bit interesting. The new Smile superhero had so many death flags sticking out of every orifice down to carrying along a locket of a kid and saying he’s about to retire. I guess we got to see X? Who just complained about all the hero-ing he doesn’t seem to actually be doing except in the original promo years ago where he was having the time of his life. The rest was basically “You need to have a higher power ranking so you can have a higher power ranking so you can do the thing with your power ranking.” For both of them. Both Revenge Dad and Dad Revenge. Which one is which? Does it even matter. Both really want revenge, for or as Dad.
