KOEI TECMO Games have today announced that FATAL FRAME II: Crimson Butterfly REMAKE, which if you couldn’t tell is a remake of the PlayStation 2 game FATAL FRAME/Project Zero II: Crimson Butterfly, will launch for Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S & Windows PC Release in 2026.
FATAL FRAME II: Crimson Butterfly REMAKE was originally shown during the Nintendo Direct Presentation for the Nintendo Switch 2, but was then confirmed to also be releasing onto the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S & Windows PC. As one can expect, this remake will feature updated visuals, gameplay, and controls, compared to its original PlayStation 2 counterpart, for a more modern (and horrifying) experience.
About: This classic Japanese horror title, beloved by fans worldwide, follows twin sisters Mio and Mayu Amakura as they visit a stream, guided by their childhood memories. Whilst Mio reminisces about the past, her older sister Mayu is drawn to a crimson-coloured butterfly, leading her to a mysterious village that seems non-existent.
In this village of never-ending night, the twins are hunted by vengeful spirits as they flee their mysterious ritual. Separated from her sister, Mio attempts to find Mayu and escape, armed only with the Camera Obscura, a device that captures and seals away the impossible. Unbeknownst to her, Mio’s actions will involuntarily reproduce the past and lead her to the deepest reaches of the village, where she will uncover the truth behind the “forbidden ritual that must never be witnessed”.
FATAL FRAME II: Crimson Butterfly REMAKE is in development for Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Windows PC with it expected to release in 2026. This remake will also feature voices in Japanese with text (and subtitles) in English, French, German, Italian and Spanish.
