Our hero fights Kaijuu. He also is a Kaijuu.
There were certainly aspects of this I enjoyed. The fights are mostly cool. The characters are fun and relaxed. It looks pretty awesome.
But largely Kaijuu No. 8 ended up as a disappointment. It had no focus. The show draws viewers in initially with the main character trying to catch up with his rival / love interest. Then she barely shows up for the rest of the show and we focus on his relationship with some 16 year old girl. (I’m pretty sure he was like 30 or something???) New characters are constantly introduced instead of capitalizing on the ones that are already there. The cast is wide and shallow. The villains are inhuman monsters who, despite a show that seems to want to be morally ambiguous with a main character who is also a monster, are not ambiguous at all and are downright boring. Introduced just to be quickly slaughtered.
Despite enjoying the initial premise, the animation, and the general style, I sadly didn’t enjoy this much.
