Alma Wants a Family #02 — “I’m Stuck, Step-Roomba”

At least he tried.

Impressions:

The middle roomba segment was decent enough, mainly for some actual effort put into animating her scampering around and chasing after it. Very kind of Potemayo vibes. But the first and third? Wasn’t a fan. The whole schtick about the lady being completely flustered by everything domestic and even interacting with him at all was wearing very thin by the first episode, and is only rubbing that nerve completely raw at this point. I don’t find it cute, nor funny. And as someone who worked in a restaurant for years, there’s so much more you can do with cooking than the same awful “it’s so hard to do literally anything” ‘gag’ every single time. Just wacky aprons alone are a completely untouched niche in anime. Even a dude wearing a pink “kiss the cook” apron would be fresh and new.

The new character in the last segment also didn’t add any new dynamic. Just his sister as a different person to also say that they’re in a relationship which causes both to be flustered. There’s no contrast or even difference from Alma here, except that there’s no chance this one brings out a beam cannon. The hard cut to a sudden tea party was a particularly weird moment, as it seemed to be setting up a joke about escalating a porn magazine obsession to get her to leave, and then there’s an entire snack spread on the table and the whole conversation of two seconds ago was cast into the void. Someone shoot something with a laser gun already.
