Hoo boy.
Impressions:
Let’s start with ANYTHING but the middle segment, because good god. I guess the ghost story bit was at least topical for being near Halloween, but it was also very half-assed. The ghost story that made him scream was literally sitting in a brightly lit room saying “What if someone knocked on your door at night.” Are we even trying here? At least the ending bit with Machina again was a bit better and actually doing weird robot things. Congrats for the bare minimum of engaging with the premise of the show. Though there was the whole thing with the astronaut with unusually well articulated English, right up until the “Space Girls!?” line, which was instead “Space ??!?” What even happened there?
But then we have the elephant in the room. An entire segment where a struggling manga artist discovers AI art, and it’s the greatest thing ever. Cheap, effortless, nobody can tell the difference, leads to rousing success. The price that she pays for using it? She forgets how to draw/write manga, which she couldn’t do in the first place. What was the joke here? What was this segment even supposed to be? What was the joke? It just comes off as an advertisement on how great AI generated art is, which, christ. Do the people making and producing this show believe that? That their stinger of “You’ll be bad at drawing manga yourself if you use AI” to be a cutting indictment on AI slop? Empty space played for five minutes would’ve been a better idea than this. What moral lesson is next? Guns are super cool and make fun loud noises, but gunpowder might stain your sleeves.
