One Punch Man 3 – 04

I’m probably close to a drop here, which would be a real shame but not entirely surprising. Between the rather tepid adaptation and the plot drift One Punch Man just isn’t offering a whole lot of incentive to stick around. Yet there are elements that do interest me, scattered here and there amongst the detritus. Mostly that’s Garou, who’s really the only reason I can find to keep watching. But he’s not the main character, and his screen time reflects that. It’s not a winning combination.

I think this episode was pretty emblematic of the state of OPM at the moment. Saitama sits around doing nothing, surrounded by a motley collection of hangers-on. The only characters really doing anything (besides the monsters) are Garou – who spends most of the episode unconscious offscreen – and Child Emperor. He’s always a positive because he actually takes his job seriously (the irony speaks for itself) and tends to be proactive. He’s the one basically taking charge of Waganma’s rescue (not that we have any reason to care about that, really). And Garou is the only one bothering to try and rescue Tareo, since no one else even knows where he is.

Saitama doesn’t really have any pathos to him. He’s omnipotent and doesn’t give a fuck – we get it. That had a certain appeal for a season but at this point it’s pretty played out. I don’t dislike the guy, I just don’t care one way or the other. And it’s not a Kimetsu situation where the monsters are more interesting as characters – these are just tokusatsu villains. It’s a measure of how dire things have gotten that I can say probably the worst thing you can about a show like this, that I don’t really remember why I liked it in the first place. I’d say it’s week-to-week at this point – if I get something worth covering, I’ll cover it.
