KOEI TECMO Games have recently announced that FATAL FRAME II: Crimson Butterfly REMAKE, which is a remake of the PlayStation 2 game FATAL FRAME/Project Zero II: Crimson Butterfly, will launch for Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S & Windows PC on the 12th March 2026.
As described by KOEI TECMO Games this remake will feature updated visuals, gameplay, and sound in order to deliver a more modern and horrifying experience for players. The gameplay mechanics of the Camera Obscura, a signature feature of the FATAL FRAME franchise, have also been reworked to offer a more intense and rich experience during combat and exploration. New Camera Obscura features such as focus, zoom and filters, have also been added to further enhance the experience.
About: This classic Japanese horror title, beloved by fans worldwide, follows twin sisters Mio and Mayu Amakura as they visit a stream, guided by their childhood memories. Whilst Mio reminisces about the past, her older sister Mayu is drawn to a crimson-coloured butterfly, leading her to a mysterious village that seems non-existent.
In this village of never-ending night, the twins are hunted by vengeful spirits as they flee their mysterious ritual. Separated from her sister, Mio attempts to find Mayu and escape, armed only with the Camera Obscura, a device that captures and seals away the impossible. Unbeknownst to her, Mio’s actions will involuntarily reproduce the past and lead her to the deepest reaches of the village, where she will uncover the truth behind the “forbidden ritual that must never be witnessed”.
Alongside the release date being announced KOEI TECMO Games have also confirmed that a Digital Deluxe Edition will be available, and that Digital Pre-Orders are also now available on digital storefronts.

Players who digitally pre-order the game before 12th March 2026 will receive the Spirit Charm, Cat Ears (White) / Cat Ears (Black) bonus, as well as the costumes Crimson Butterfly – Mio (Original) / Crimson Butterfly – Mayu (Original) bonus, inspired by outfits from the original game.

FATAL FRAME II: Crimson Butterfly REMAKE is in development for Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Windows PC and is scheduled to release on the 12th March 2026. This remake will also feature voices in Japanese with text (and subtitles) in English, French, German, Italian and Spanish.
