At least they thought about trying.
Impressions:
I’m mostly baffled by the structure of this episode, particularly the final segment. It abruptly jumps into a a media res of fighting an all-consuming kaiju they accidentally unleashed, only to flashback to explain that. Why not spend the first half of the episode instead building up to this for a cohesive full episode starting from some goofy toy and spiraling out of control to the over the top conclusion? By starting from the conclusion and backtracking, you lose that escalation. But also, why aren’t we doing a full on Godzilla or Super Sentai parody here? Why aren’t we doing, well, anything? They just call out the previously shown alternate Almas and… that’s it. Also another place where the lack of the budget did zero good. Lack of ambition too.
That’s the second half though. The first half was two segments, though one was a pretty odd one about trading stickers which was just… hey, kids trade stickers. That’s a thing, right? Apparently. There’s literally not any jokes in it. It’s similarly baffling. The initial kidnapping one was almost okay, in that at least you could see how things were spiraling out of control, but things quickly devolved to just them doing schtick while the dude played the straight man overreacting to everything, and I suspect it was just an excuse for some low hanging bondage rope sight gags anyway. “Here’s how you do a kidnapping RIGHT,” and forcing him into a supervillain incident is the obvious flow to me. Again, an opportunity for something like a superhero parody, or going over the top was right in front of them, and completely squandered.
