Spy X Family Season 3 – 09
The frustrations of watching Spy X Family are different from Fumetsu no Anata e, though almost as vexing. Fumetsu is a tropical cyclone of weirdness, capable of higher highs and wildly unpredictable. With SpyFam I pretty much know from an episode preview whether it’s going to suck (like next week) or has a chance to be good. That’s why even when it delivers a really good ep – and this one was really good – you can’t let yourself get too enthused about it.
But none of that takes away from the fact that this ep was outstanding, one of the best of the entire run. SxF’s humor is generally pretty broad and juvenile, so it’s no wonder the comedy is much funnier when it’s actually executed with the kids in focus. DamiAnya is one of the best reasons to keep watching this show. Both because their interplay – the esper and the tsundere – is consistently amusing and because Damian’s story has more pathos than every other SpyFam character’s put together. And watching Anya – who’s selfish and not the sharpest knife in the drawer but not inappropriately for a first-grader – evolve in her view of him is genuinely interesting.
I actually thought Damian was going to get a legit warm moment with his family there when Melinda showed up to collect him in the aftermath of the busjacking. But no, Endou would never let him have that so easily. She did show up, at least he has that. And he let his guard down for once, just as Anya did when Yor arrived for her. But as soon as Damian mentioned Donovan his mother’s full sociopath side revealed itself (mostly to Anya). Her conflicted feelings for her son were nauseating to be sure. And while Anya can’t truly understand them of course, she does get that Damian’s world is very messed up.
One some level Anya does want to to the right thing by Damian, and has come to realize he’s actually a good boy in a bad situation. But she can’t help being the greedy little imp she is and sees the potential value he holds for her, and their competitiveness will always win out. This is a sore spot for him too – he knows the respect he’s usually treated with is due to his name, not his nature. But the truth does slip out – he thinks of Anya as a friend now. She sees the potential there too, and switcheroo-ing to “B Plan” and inviting Damian over to the Forger apartment actually is a smart idea. Much easier than finagling an invite to his place for sure.
Ranma ½ (2025) – 09
At long last, Ryouga. And not in buta form either. You wouldn’t think with a cast of zanies this big the absence of just one would matter that much. But Ryouga has been missed. He’s genuinely funny of course, not least because of Yamadera Kouichi. But he’s also a genuinely innocent and kind goof, lacking the guile that most of Ranma ½’s characters possess. He stands out in a good way and it’s great to have him back.
Uryu is fun too. Not my absolute favorite, as I said last week, but consistently pretty amusing. Once she learns Ryouga is sweet on Akane she decides to set them up on a date for obvious reasons. Akane being Akane assumes the invitation okonomiyaki is actually a challenge, and is only too happy to show up and accept it. Ranma for his part decided to disguise himself as Ryouga’s long-lost fiancee and mess with them. Akane spots it immediately of course but poor Ryouga has no idea until the wig comes off (much later).
The uncharacteristically serious side to this (it’s a small side to be sure) is that getting Ryouga mixed up in their three-way melee is rather cruel. He takes all this seriously of course – including Ranma’s jape. Akane at least has the decency to feel guilty about that and invites him on a real (if pity) date the next day. Ranma pulls his stunt again and actually gets Ryouga to waver for a second – which fills him with guilt for being unfaithful to his beloved in his mind. He runs off in shame, only to be caught in a sprinkler and P-channed. At least he can face Akane in this form and get some cuddling time in (which is actually kind of a creepy side of him if we’re honest).
