It’s been quite some time since we last reported on Crunchyroll’s UK Blu-Ray release of Sailor Moon, but thanks to a new age rating listing on the BBFC website we can confirm that Season 1 of the original 1992 anime series has been rated for a UK release.
As many of our readers might know, in order for a TV series or film to be sold in to the UK a rating from the BBFC (British Board of Film Classification) must be obtained. Once a rating has been obtained the distributor, which in this case is Crunchyroll, can then arrange for the product to be released. The BBFC rating for Sailor Moon – Season 1 can be viewed on the BBFC website, and overall it has been awarded a 15.
Majority of the episodes have been rated PG, with some exceptions for U and 12, but overall the first season has been given a 15 rating and this is seemingly due to the content found within Episode 4. The content advice for this episode (Learn How to Be Skinny from Usagi) describes it as featuring Sexual Violence and Sexual Threat, where a boy secretly takes photos of a woman at the gym, and Themes of weight loss. Other additional issues noted include a sexualised focus on the body of a female character, romance between characters and scenes of mild violence.
Rating aside, we now have definitive confirmation that Crunchyroll (UK) are going ahead with individual season sets for Sailor Moon, starting with Season 1, and that it will be the uncut version of the series in both English and Japanese. The rating on the BBFC website also lists the inclusion of Bonus Material, which comes in at around 19 minutes. This could include the Behind the Scenes English Dub cast recordings that were included on the Australian and US Blu-ray sets. Of course we won’t know the specifics of this set until more information becomes available (or until it is released).
Crunchyroll originally announced Sailor Moon for a UK release back in October 2024 at MCM Comic Con in London, but it wasn’t until earlier this year when it was confirmed that the series would be released as complete season sets in steel book form. As it stands we still don’t have a release date, or visuals of the steelbook, for this Season 1 release; but with a rating now confirmed its just a matter of time before these details are finalized and shared online.
