Impressions:
Not sure that I’m really feeling this one either, though it certainly has a lot more going on with its presentation, but at its core, it’s a manzai routine. A manzai routine about the darker sides of social media and streaming that actually has a bit of knowledge and insight about it, unlike most anime about streamers, but still a manzai routine. It’s nearly twenty straight minutes of one overexcited character overreacting while the straight man (two in this case) provide deadpan one-liners for them to overreact to.
This episode was much more focused on the rival trio, and the petulant overreacting one in particular, but other than establishing their personalities, it didn’t feel to me like much was added, and maybe even lost since a lot of the disturbing imagery and off-screen happenings… like the rape, were gone from the episode. There was really just the negative comments as literal poop, which isn’t subtle. So I have to wonder if this is how the whole show is going to be. To wit, a series of standup routines. It doesn’t seem like it’s setting up any kind of overarching narrative or conflict. Nor an ongoing story. I can’t say that approach appeals much to me, and especially since I’m not a fan of the entire manzai thing.
