Branch of Reincarnation #05 — (Face/Heel)-(Heel/Face) Turn

We’re not doing an Ides of March thing for Caesar?

Impressions:

Another fairly eventful episode, though I can’t say I think the ending to the various sides were handled too well. The sniper duel was apparently already finished, and both the other main ones that finished had everybody simply declare their respect for each other and dissolve into magic petals. Well, Newton and Einstein wandered back, immediately completely ignoring all warnings they were just given to get mindjacked by surprise-not-surprise antagonist turn, and the whole Caesar backstab thing was pretty silly with all the popup powerpoint slides of sword techniques plus unresolved. That would’ve worked far better as part of the initial “everything goes to hell” stuff rather than during the mop up period with them just in some random field.

Touya was the real letdown though. He really needed to be involved a lot more in the fight, not to mention morally struggling with opportunities to steal the power vs going after the enemy’s version of it. He was simply uninvolved, so a whole big dramatic friendship declaration of the shared struggle and bonds falls totally flat. Plus, if the twist here is that the baddies are just out to kill people who are too far up their own asses and addicted to superpowers with messiah complexes, that gives him extra opportunity to foreshadow that and demonstrate his humanity compared to the others. But he was absent, and so we get the dramatic reveals but without any buildup or even swerves enough to be a twist because we also didn’t spend any time futzing around with humanity. It was straight to the fields to kill off everybody just revealed to even exist in the first place.
