A Kickstarter campaign to help produce a 30-minute anime pilot and spiritual sequel to Tenchi Muyo!, entitled Tenchi Galaxy, has recently begun from Armiger Entertainment, and it has already achieved over £217,000 in funding from the community. The project will not only see an entirely new anime episode produced, but will also see the return of English cast members from the original Tenchi Muyo! anime series reprising their roles in the new episode.
According to the Kickstarter campaign director Hiroshi Negishi wrote a draft for a would-be sequel to the Tenchi Muyo franchise, but was unable to bring this concept to reality. Now, with support from Armiger Entertainment and this Kickstarter campaign, they are looking to produce an 30-minute pilot episode that will hopefully evolve into a full anime series.
Story:TENCHI GALAXY follows the Tenchi gang as they travel to the planet of the space pirates, MIKUNI, in search of an artifact that was stolen from Jurai. In order to get it back, they must face NIIMI, the queen of the space pirates. What dangers await them? What connection does Niimi have to Ryoko? And whose side is Nagi on?
The Interesting aspect of this Kickstarter Campaign is not just the continuation of the original Tenchi Muyo story, as this episode will take place after the events of Tenchi Universe, but it is the fact that majority of the voice cast from the original series will be returning to reprise their roles.Additionally, Cristina Vee will be stepping in to the role of Ayeka while virtual idol Nerissa Ravencroft will be voicing Lisa.
Voice Cast:
Petrea Burchard as RYOKO
Matt K. Miller as TENCHI
Cristina Vee as AYEKA
Sherry Lynn as SASAMI & DETECTIVE KIYONE
Rebecca Forstadt as MIHOSHI
K.T. Vogt as WASHU
Debi Derryberry as RYO-OHKI
Julia Fletcher as NAGI
Nerissa Ravencroft as RISA, THE SPACE PIRATE
Cast aside, the campaign is looking to secure nearly £300,000 in funds so that the episode can be produced with stretch goals at £450,000 for Japanese Audio, £475,000 for 4K UHD Resolution and £500,000 for a making of documentary. The campaign still has more than 58 days to go and has already achieved more than £217,000 in support.
As this is a Kickstarter Campaign those that do pledge support can receive various rewards depending on the amount pledged. For instance a £25 pledge will give you access to the episode on Blu-Ray (as well as a digital download version) while pledging £60 will give you the same reward but your name a credit listing in the disc. Additionally rewards are also available including a steelbook edition and higher tier wards that get your name in the credits even further. Add-ons will also be available for purchase including a Sticker Sheet, ArtBook and VHS Tape version of the episode.
The Kickstarter campaign will run until 7th September 2026, which until then those interested can pledge support. If successful then fans can expect the 30-minute episode to be produced. Either way, if you are a Tenchi! fan then it is exicting news, as the original series is extremely memorable to a lot of anime fans (myself included).
