Doomsday Train #12 — Bullying Wins Again

Everybody scream at her. That’ll help.

Impressions:

I did not expect a good ending at this point, and it didn’t even really get to an ending at all. The girl with the scrambled brain who just wants everybody to stop yelling at and berating her was the only sympathetic one in this episode. The dude’s big evil master plan? Doesn’t want to be blamed for the apocalypse, which is great because everybody just forgot about him the second it was over. And by over, I mean the world is slightly changed, but still a nightmare hellscape of people with animal heads, zombies, etc. But slightly less surreal now, apparently, and we declared that the world will no longer be destroyed, I guess.

And then we turn to the script. The deus ex zombies, swan boat, and house plant were the worst offenders. Seriously. There’s a scene where a character almost literally says “Wait, why are you suddenly holding a potted plant out of nowhere?” “Oh, this? I guess it must be important for Yoka’s flashbacks.” And then two minutes later, it explodes into more flashbacks. It takes three minutes of exposition for them to put together that Yoka has to press the button, including declaring that they can’t just go back and get it… and then they do exactly that. And the big dramatic confrontation scene is basically a loop of “I was mean to you, but because I care so much,” “You’re a selfish ass,” “HEY! YOU CAN’T TALK TO HER THAT WAY!” Basically screaming at her until she broke down in tears and gave up. I also loved when they brought up how much fun they had on their journey, with a flashback to that time they killed a bunch of people when trying to save them. Absurdism belongs in the visuals, not in the attempts to appeal to emotion.

Basically, all the other terribleness that has been endemic to this show was in full force, and they resolved absolutely nothing except picking up Yoka. The apocalypse is still going on, but they decided they didn’t care any more because change is good, actually, and they yelled at Yoka until she relented. Peer pressure saves the day, except for the zombie people who wanted their free will back, and those who’d rather live without a toucan for a head.
