Code Geass: Rozé of the Recapture Review — B

The cart driver was actually Lelouch and somehow Brittania is back oppressing elevens.

But really the biggest plot hole is how does she fit these enormous boobs into her boy disguise?

This was definitely better than the last attempt at a Code Geass sequel with those awful OVAs set in Europe. But like that, I feel like it fundamentally misunderstands what made the original so much fun. It’s all about Lelouch’s character. He’s so arrogant and his motives are questionable, with his own obvious position of privilege, but he fundamentally has a heart that yearns for justice and will do whatever it takes for what’s right, as opposed to that dumbass Suzaku. And he has these brilliant plots that twist things around at the last second and make for some peak entertainment. At the same time, he can’t run up stairs. You get to really care about the characters through the school life aspects of the show.

Here it tried to be all serious all the time, with a focus only on the fighting, and a main character who is supposedly smart but mostly just uses her Geass in a much less entertaining way than Lelouch and quickly gets outwitted. Not that Lelouch didn’t constantly get outwitted but he did so in a much more entertaining way and had a great evil laugh. Here it feels like they had a plot they want to get through— in the original, we got to know people, attention was paid to details (like that guy making marks on the wall at lunch pretty much until the end), they had some great villains (Suzaku, Orange, the emperor) and it had the emotional power to really make you pissed about the same injustices Lelouch was pissed about. In this show it’s all more abstract.

To be clear, pretty much everything I’ve said is negative but I still enjoyed this. I’ve missed the drama and the skinny character designs (pretty sure the boobs have drastically expanded though?).

Storytelling – B – Entertaining but could have been better.
Voice – B – It’s Code Geass but a pale imitation.
Characters – B – Not up to snuff with the originals, but fine.
Attention Grab – B – Kept my interest.
Production – B – Looks fine.
Overall – B

RecommendationsCode Geass (I should rewatch it for like the twentieth time too)
