No anime is ever going to live that down apparently.
Impressions:
I guess we’ll start with the throwbacks. The positive is that its animation isn’t bad, pointlessly CGI knives notwithstanding, though that could also be how many shows this season are atrociously animated recalibrating my expectations. A gag here and there wasn’t awful either, mostly the ones that didn’t have the punchline of the dude yelling. She’s quiet as well, which is something I appreciate in an anime landscape that is all overreactions and loudly yelling for the last couple years.
Which leads to the negative. If you’ve watched anime at any point in the last twenty five years, you’ve probably seen this exact episode of some flavor of clumsy WMD girlfriend becoming a maid/servant/slave at least a dozen times. And that the dude only has loudly overreacting and blushing about having a female within seven nautical miles of him. There’s also something about the music that I can’t quite put my finger on. Lots of loud piano that doesn’t really fit the scene, but that could also be the direction failing to transition from one joke to the next as it’s very locked into a 4-panel format where everything must come to a full stop each time a joke or silly face is made and fully reset the conversation while the music blithely charges forward.
