New Anime

Puniru is a Cute Slime #01 — Serial Dysmorphia

Wherein I mostly compare it to other better comedies.

Grieving Soul basically re-ran the first episode. Sure, the first ended with saying they were off to do a quest, but first they needed to test their mettel in a pre-quest. So they had the two characters who fought last week, spar again this week. Next week, the quest actually begins. Probably. Which is why I’m giving up on it.

Impressions:

I was really hoping this would focus more on the visual body horror gags and less on the Ataru-knockoff screaming overreactions to everything, but far too naive was I, as that’s the only humor that can exist in anime these days. The occasional times when it tried to do other jokes, such as handing off boobs to play with, or Puniru being manhandled by an overzealous Not-Pokemon fanboy, it was… well, still mediocre, unfortunately. At least the former gag had nobody yelling. Just manual masectomies.

For those who missed all the Lum style knockoffs, your Rizelmines, your Chobits, your Midori Days, which were all the rage some twenty years ago, I guess this exists and has updated that humor for the modern age. So now instead of 75% of the gags being loudly overreacting, it’s 90%. If it had been a bit weirder overall, it could’ve tapped into the same kind of humor as Potemayo or Squid Girl, but almost with so little variation in the humor, everything blends together into a stream of loud noise. And it definitely lacks the same aggressive surreality of something like the Deer show, or other slapstick gag comedies that had stronger characters and plotlines, like Pani Poni Dash or Milky Holmes.
