To Be Hero X #10 — Random Zombie Apocalypse

The Nice writing wasn’t great, but these last two arcs have been… worse.

I have no idea what’s up with Lazarus’s 10th episode. It was early ‘airing’ on some Indonesian webcast anyway. Well, I’ll get to it when I get to it. Not that I can say I’m looking forward to it much at any rate.

Impressions:

Eh. This episode was complete nonsense, but at least it was well animated. …Mostly well animated. There were a few scenes where the frame rate dropped into the single digits where it’s clear production hadn’t finished yet, but at least there was some action. The writing, though? This rivals Bye Bye Earth for how utterly nonsensical it all was. Apparently at least months passed, and she not only learned combat skills but also spontaneously a rumor started that she drains luck from everybody around her rather than give good luck, which both doesn’t make sense, but is apparently on an ultra delayed clock. And so her old haunt is now awash in alien goo that turns people into ravenous zombies. You’d think maybe somebody would be concerned about lower Manhatten being ground zero for a zombie plague stemming from one insane dude, but I guess it was the season finale of Seinfeld or something. Also, not saying that being a luck vampire isn’t responsible, but if you’re letting a budget Doc Octopus mind-control an entire city and unleash a zombie apocalypse, I think that’s well past bad luck and into homicidal negilgence.

Anyway, everyone on the plane, including her BF’s parents, actually gave their luck/hopes/dreams to Cyan after it was already about to crash, and that’s the big ‘secret’ that both absolves her and fixes literally everything. Somehow. Again, not sure how that tracks if we’re already saying she was a luck vampire from the start. Really feel like her confronting her survivor’s guilt would’ve been a much better angle to take rather than her… not actually really doing much of anything except finally after the indeterminate amount of time that passed bothering to do more than linger outside the door to actually check if her BF is still alive. She doesn’t actually grow as a character at all. Or even exist as one, to be honest. She just does as she’s told for three episodes straight. Be the holy maiden. Okay, now rebel and go be yourself. Now go find the plot widget. And each time, she goes “Okay, I’ll do my best!” and then proceeds to have zero agency of her own despite occasionally mewling how she wished she did.

Also, speaking of him, wasn’t he dead in the pre-show promos? Actually dead dead? I’m pretty sure he was, which is why I’ve been surprised that we dragged this origin story arc out for so long, and then ends with them merrily wandering off together. Well, maybe they can kill him next week and we can all look forward to that. Man, this show has gone downhill since the Nice arc.
