The memes did it better.
I did glance at Last Crusade’s second episode, but it continued to avoid anything happening. As did both the Twins thing, and the Russian girls thing, which introduced a second Russian girl, another sister, who also immediately glomps all over the dude because he looked… melancholy, I guess? Bringing the total Russians and total sisters to two each. One Russian, one sister, one Russian sister. Now that’s creativity.
Impressions:
Oh, it’s the specific clip that was memed to absolute death by the internet, but now, instead of being a surreal five second clip set to catchy music, it’s two and a half minutes set to some aharmonic mumbling. I don’t think that improved the joke or the delivery. In a lot of ways, that entire half of the episode was pretty characteristic of anime humor the last few years; just an idiot overreacting to literally nothing, screaming out long explanations for how much they’re overreacting.
And then we get to the new character in the second half, whose verbal tic/delivery pained me severely. She speaks very stilted and childishly. Just the constant third person with a three syllable name, each syllable spat out deliberately and painfully, BA! SHA! ME!, was driving me up a wall within twenty seconds. Nor was she introduced with any purpose or structure. She was just on their porch one day and then it’s time to sit around and overreact to each other again. Give me something here. I don’t think the barest sitcom structure or plot is asking for too much.
