The Elusive Samurai #17 — Art of War

As penned with crayons.

Impressions:

I’m just glad this arc is over. It’s been probably the weakest of this show so far and leaves me baffled as to what the point of it was. They introduced a bunch of new dudes at the start, only for all of them to not do anything, focus at the end was on that comic relief buffoon which is a losing proposition in every way, but especially after that corny and stupid “protect my box” nonsense, and then they brought back the dude from the end of last season just to… have everyone immediately declare the arc over and go home. This dude is supposed to be some kind of major imposing recurring nemesis? Random bug-belly? I barely even remember what his schtick was. He was kind of sedate when not screaming about murdering children?

So what was the point then? There was no particular focus on any character. Nobody did anything in particular nor learned any valuable lesson, unless you count “war is war” as something that needed learning. What were we doing here? Learning that carrying a box with a single dude onto a battlefield is a gimmicky, yet extremely poor battle tactic? Even that was handled in a dumb way. Attack from the left, because it’s hard to replace left handed people! Okay, or ignore it entirely because at worst, it’s a single dude shooting a single bow. Or shoot it with one arrow you’ve lit on fire. Or shoot a couple guys with arrows. Everything about this was dumb for it being both cliffhanger and puzzle that needed explaining for a third of the episode.
