Hand puns will be very low hanging.
Impressions:
Certainly taking a lot of inspiration from Trigger/Gainax, painfully so as this is a very cut and paste premise from a zillion mecha/mecha adjacent shows, but man, am I getting really sick of sniveling protagonists. Give me a Sword or at least a Shinpei. This one doesn’t even make sense. He spends the entire first half of the episode ignoring people, ignoring regulations, and doing his own thing, obeying the voice in his head even while whining that doing so makes no sense, immediately tries to abandon it, then gives his heroic affirmation speech about how it’s so easy for everybody else to… uh, try? To ignore people who need help? You know, that thing that not a single person in the show has done yet, but I guess we lingered on a couple signs for three seconds that were supposed to be meaningful, so a quick flashback to try to claim this was a Big Character moment. Why couldn’t we just follow the girl instead?
Inconsistent and cliche is at least a little better than relentlessly abrasive though. But at the same time, all the sparks were in the first couple minutes of the episode and especially the two ‘fights’ at the end were incredibly disappointing. One was entirely off-screen, the other was a single screaming punch that the girl face-tanked despite the 20 seconds of windup. A lot could definitely be tightened up, and I wouldn’t mind if the protagonist was shot in the face next episode and replaced with someone who at the very least wasn’t constantly announcing that their actions made no sense. Compared to the mountain of cheat power/RPG world things though? Consider any complains minor quibbles.
