Yakuza Fiancé #01 — Putting on Faces

How has this girl survived so far exactly?

Impressions:

The last of the human trafficking shows for Monday, and certainly one that thinks it’s a lot funnier than it actually is judging by the sheer number of silly faces the main character likes to make. Regardless of the circumstance. She reacts to threats of rape and being sold into slavery the same way as she does being bullied by bitchy teenagers as she does seeing a man that is slightly more attractive than she was anticipating. It’s also a hard premise to get behind. I’m miserable, everybody hates me, I jumped into this situation without thinking and regret it already, but I’m not just going to leave. I’d rather ruin my life, sell kidneys, throw away the money, and act suicidally out of spite. Wouldn’t the whole thing work better if it was inescapable? If she couldn’t just… up and leave?

Given that the studio is Deen, the production will definitely not be carrying it, so it’s all on the characters, and silly faces aren’t going to cut it for me. It’s hard to even really call it a dark comedy when the main character is so immature and one of her big triumph moments is yelling at some low end high school bullies. Even that scene has a very “and then everybody clapped” vibe to it, where it painfully strains belief. At least it does set down the premise though. More than a lot of other shows managed in their 20 minutes.
