Twilight Hotel #01 — Go, Do Crimes

Anime, you really need to learn what a mystery is.

Impressions:

When your introductory mystery as to a character’s identity and name is solved by them randomly finding a piece of paper with all that information on it, expectations for the mysteries to come is set pretty damn low. I’m probably also just traumatized from the last couple shows, but this one actually made me laugh in a couple places too, though not with it. There’s a scene at the bar where literally every character, one after another, spews out the most unimaginably stilted exposition, reminding each other of what they already know for the sake of the protagonist/audience. It’s so unbelievably awkward and corny.

Then, entire premise completely recited, we finally at 15 minutes into the episode, get to the mystery of the week, figuring out the identity of a lady with a tarot card for a face. The protagonist uses her keen powers of observation to… notice a bookshelf, and then explain that she knows everything about the random C-list huckster celebrity that the lady keeps ranting about, thus solving the mystery and we continue the exposition by just saying what happened. So not actually a mystery whatsoever. Not even to the level of the doctor thing. The really weird part was that the protagonist then encouraged her to become a huckster herself, thus giving her a reason to keep living. Not, uh… the strongest start.
